Because MLC is directly tied to CPU usage, reducing MIPS consumption is vital for getting more out of your mainframe without increasing costs. And that’s exactly what IBM’s System z Integrated Information Processor (zIIP) is designed to do. With zIIP, you can offload some workloads from your CPU to hardware.

According to BMC, this new zIIP offloading capability, along with previously-introduced BMC MainView zIIP exploitation efforts represent a significant step to reduce the costs of MIPS, the primary cost driver in mainframe environments. New zIIP capabilities for BMC's DB2 products support the company's efforts to help its customers reduce costs.

The zIIP is designed to help lower software costs for select workloads on the mainframe, such as business intelligence (BI), enterprise resource planning (ERP) and customer relationship management (CRM). High performance Mainframe Zip Data Compression features like zIIP processing and zEDC compression acceleration greatly reduce compression time and cost. Industry standard compatible ZIP, ZIP64,GZIP and AES Encryption. Plugin replacement for PKZIP/SecureZip z/OS slashes costs.

Outsourced mainframe customers often lack a clear understanding of how well their outsourcer is managing the mainframe capacity and performance relative to what is optimal for the customer. The customer seldom has access to the data needed to really understand their capacity usage and often lack the skills to Software AG’s zIIP Enabler for Natural takes advantage of IBM’s innovation in specialty engines to lower the mainframe’s Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) by moving almost all Natural batch workload from IBM General Purpose Processors (GPPs) to less expensive zIIP processors for execution. This provides a low-cost alternative to increasing capacity on existing GPPs for customers reaching Mainframe FOCUS Utilization of the zIIP. 6 Leveraging IBM and the z/Architecture with the IBM zIIP Specialty Engine If you do not have a zIIP at your site, and you are not sure how much a zIIP would benefit FOCUS processing, then add PROJECTCPU=ON to your sys1.parmlib table and run several jobs. The zIIP is unique because the work it performs is not measured for the purposes of calculating mainframe capacity and it has no speed restrictions. Our software has the ability to offload to the zIIP up to 99% of the mainframe integration processing for the multiple, parallel patterns of integration it supports, including Web services, SQL data access, events, and Web enablement.

Our solutions include - Mainframe systems, parts, features and peripherals - Mainframe maintenance, 2818-M05 w/N01 (172 mips) 16gb memory, 1 x zIIP.

The zIIP engine offloads Java™ workload and specific CP-intensive workload. The MIPS capacity of the zIIP engine does not count toward the overall MIPS rating of the mainframe image, so all CPU usage incurred on the zIIP is not chargeable from IBM. Effectively, all workload run on the zIIP is free.

I have a request to copy Mainframe file to Notepad. I used transfer file option after giving 6 (coomand)in the ISPF menu. As the file is very big it had been transfering longtime hence I aborted. After that I googled and learnt that mainframe file can be zipped by using the tool PKZIP. I got the below job in the one of the sites.

Depending on the version of DB2 you are running, search for DB2 and your version and zIIP and you will find a list of tasks that are zIIP eligible. Keep in mind that even though a task may be zIIP eligible, zIIP cap limitations and zIIP capacity could limit what workload is actually off loaded. Randy Ebersole The mainframe does it a bit different by ensuring all the threads to the core are from the same program.

IBM introduced the zIIP (system Z Integrated Information Processor) in 2006. IBM licenses zIIP hardware for a fraction of the corresponding charges for GPs. More importantly to you, zIIP processors are not counted in the basis for software charges, so you can see major savings by shifting workload from GPs to zIIPs.

It’s normal for it to run this way. The blue bar values are "zIIP on zIIP" – the work that was eligible for zIIP that actually ran on zIIPs. This is goodness. The green bar values are "zIIP on GCP" – the work that while eligible for zIIP ran on GCPs.
